Dear family and friends:

Hi, I’m Barb and I have a brain injury.  Funny way to start a letter, but along with those who say those words for different reasons, I’m in a recovery from something and I will never be the same again.  Recovery for many brain injuries is a matter of weeks or months. Recovering is a funny word.  We assume that means getting back to 100%.  But recovering for some with a brain injury isn’t like recovering from a illness or a broken bone and getting back to normal again.   It means learning to live, accept and maybe learn to like that “new normal”.  Maybe a better word is “discovery”. It means families  and friends learning to live, accept and even love the “new normal”.  Personalities, emotions, behaviors, cognitive abilities, language, memory, physical abilities all can be affected by a brain injury.  Many, maybe most brain injuries are invisible to others.  People with a brain injury may only struggle for a short time with some new challenges.  For others it is a lifetime of change, challenge and discovery.  And because of being an invisible injury, many challenges and struggles are unknown and many survivors of brain injury feel alone in this journey.

I say all this to lead to the Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado (BIAC).  One of their programs designed to directly help survivors from any kind of brain injury are support groups.  Found all over the state, these groups help survivors like me, find allies, cheerleaders and new friends.  Through our monthly meetings, I’ve learned a lot from the professionals that present, but mostly through the other survivors.  I learn new ways to compensate, I am encouraged and I have the chance to say “me too” and discover a new way of coping.

Support groups are just one of the many programs that the BIAC provides for survivors: camps and activities for all ages and conferences and workshops for education and information resources for the survivor, caregivers and professionals.

On September 6, I will be hiking the Pikes Peak Challenge (PPC).  The PPC is a fund raising event for the BIAC.  It is now a three-hike event.  The hike up to the top of Pikes Peak, the Barr Camp Hike and the Manitou Walk.  I will be doing the same as I have the last two years and hiking to Barr Camp and back down (14 miles).  This year, for the first time, this hike is an official part of the PPC.  It is a fun time and a very challenging event.  The Manitou Walk is open to all and is handicap accessible.  It is great to see all the professionals hiking on behalf of their patients, survivors who have overcome so much to be able to walk/hike, friends and families members hiking on behalf of someone who didn’t survive a brain injury.  So many people, with so many stories, all pulling together for this event.

I invite you to join me on this hike in one of two ways:  Register, get involved, raise support and hike with me.  Join my team “b-razz ba-tazz” and head to Barr Camp and back down. OR consider supporting me with a donation to the Brain Injury Alliance of CO.  You can send a check made out to “BIAC” directly to me (Barb Wagenfuhr, 10120 Quail Creek Ln, Colorado Springs, CO 80920) or you can donate directly to my webpage.  There you can read updates and  facts and figures about brain injury.   https://www.pikespeakchallenge.com/campaigns/pikes-peak-challenge-barr-camp-hiker-barb-wagenfuhr/

I hope that you will join me and thank you in advance of your support.  Without you, BIAC cannot offer the much needed services to the brain injury community in Colorado.

Thank you,

Barb
