Hi fam and friends –

As most of you know, for the past year and a half I have been volunteering with Achilles, an organization that transforms the lives of people with disabilities through athletic programs and social connection. Through my experience I have had the privilege of getting to know Frankie, an extremely kind and caring 24 year-old with an impeccable sense of humor. Jogging with Frankie around Wash Park has become a consistent highlight of my week, which is why I was so excited when she asked if I would guide her in the Pikes Peak Challenge.

Frankie (she also goes by Francesca) sustained an anoxic brain injury during a routine heart surgery in December of 2018 while she was attending CU Boulder and on the rowing team. The surgery caused her vision to be severely impaired and for her to have a wide variety of physical and mental disabilities, many of which continue to this day.

Since the injury, Frankie’s life has understandably been challenging, but through BIAC and other organizations like Achilles, her life is characterized by improvement and hope, rather than failure and loss. She is back in school, with a goal of becoming a paralegal. Our Monday jogs consist of her recounting her favorite weekend adventures, which include hiking and going to concerts.
