It has been many years but I will never forget the phone call, the one every parent dreads, “There’s been an accident” My beautiful 17 year old daughter had been catastrophically injured and was in critical condition. The police and a victims advocate came to get me and took me to the hospital where she was clinging to life and they told me her chances of survival were slim and to think about organ donation. The next few days were filled with plenty of scares and fear along with much prayer and holding her hand trying to transfer my energy into her body. She had sustained a traumatic brain injury. We were blessed as she gradually came out of the coma. She had to relearn how to breathe, walk, talk and everything else. After a long while of hospital stays in ICU, surgery, then a transfer to a long term acute care we were able to get her into Craig Hospital. This is where the magic happens! She was able to learn how to do things and she thrived. Amanda is now a beautiful, amazing adult, a contributing member to society and I am so incredibly grateful! Many years ago someone with an injury like hers would not have survived much less recovered like she has. Medical advances, the best doctors and nurse and the research into brain injuries all contributed to this. Every year 1.5 million( Yes million) people in the US sustain a brain injury. This includes many of our military folks. Everyone reading this will likely be affected by brain injury in their lifetime whether it is you or someone you know. You can help! The Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado makes such a difference! On Sept 9th I will be hiking Pikes Peak alongside many family members and survivors and supporters to help raise money for this cause.
