I’m an ECT Brain Injury Survivor.

And I’m raising money for the Brain Injury Association of Colorado (BIAC)—the organization that helped me rebuild my life.

In 2017, I began Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) to treat depression. I was told I’d need 6–12 unilateral treatments over a month. Instead, I underwent 68 procedures—mostly bilateral—over 22 months. My mental health never improved. It only got worse.

ECT left me with retrograde amnesia and cognitive impairment so severe I was diagnosed with Major Neurocognitive Disorder (dementia). I lost 40 years of memories—my identity, my sense of self, shared histories with friends and family, basic skills, and a lifetime of knowledge.

I wasn’t just lost. I was erased.

Then came another blow: a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease. I went from bent to broken. I lived in isolation, struggling to survive with amnesia, cognitive decline, and physical disability.

In 2021, I turned to BIAC. And everything began to change.

They welcomed me into a community of survivors, facilitators, and program staff who embraced me. I joined support groups, took classes, and found healing in outdoor recreation. I made friends. I discovered passions for hiking, photography, poetry, and nature. I learned what it means to live with a brain injury.

BIAC also gave me the opportunity to give back—through opportunities to volunteer as a peer mentor and meditation teacher. These roles have been life-changing. Helping other survivors gives my pain purpose.

But now BIAC is facing devastating funding cuts. Programs like the Peer Mentorship program—lifelines for people like me—have already been shut down.

I’m asking for your help—not just for me, but for every survivor who turns to BIAC.

Your support offers more than services. It offers connection, dignity, and hope. It reminds us that we matter.

Being disabled doesn’t make us disposable.

Thank you for being part of my community. Your support means more than I can express.
